Dear Sir,

With reference to the enquiry made in your note of the

27th ultimo addressed to Mr. Bruce, I have the pleasure of

supplying you with the information you require, which has

been obtained from official papers in my Branch.

The present contract between the French Government and

the Messageries Maritimes was entered into on the 22nd of

July 1888 for a period of 15 years, and would, therefore,

in ordinary course have expired in July 1903; but it has

been extended, with certain modifications, until the 21st of

July 1912, by means of a supplementary contract dated the 5th

of November 1894.
